In my cocoa?

My post earlier convinced me that I needed something chocolate. The dropping (finally!)temperatures dictated sipping chocolate. I was all set to make a cup on my dinner break to take back to work with me, but found myself driving out of the neighborhood without it. "Oh well, I'll just stop at the grocery store and pick something up." I got the store and started looking for something comparable to my fabulous Bellagio brand European-style sipping chocolate...

Diddly Squat. Have you ever actually read the ingredient labels on the hot chocolate mixes? Did you know that some of them don't actually have chocolate in them? I read 4 or 5 different boxes of the stuff only to see the same ingredients, though in slightly different orders. They include: sugar, milk solids (or dried milk), something about palm kernels, high fructose corn syrup, modified whey, hydrogenated soybean oil, and a host of other hard to pronounce additives. If you're lucky, somewhere not close enough to the top of the list they might mention cocoa (processed with alkali, even!).

I ended up choosing the only mix on the shelf with chocolate as the first ingredient: Ghiradelli Premium Hot Cocoa (with hazelnut). It's....eh. A far cry from my beloved Bellagio - who's total ingredients are, for comparison's sake: 100% Pure Cocoa Powder, Pure Cane Sugar, Chocolate Liquor, and Cocoa Butter. I highly recommend it for the serious dark chocolate lover.
