I'm having an frustratingly difficult time fitting stays/corsets/supportive underthings used to achieve the correct shape for .

I am consistently mis-estimating the amount of squish that my rather fleshy self is capable of. The most current irritation is 18th century. It seems like no matter how much I take in a set of stays, they always seem to meet in the back.

Anyone have any insight on successfully estimating? I know 18th c. isn't about tight lacing, but in order to get anything to fit with a gap, I'm going to have to take about 5 inches off my waist, and another 2 to get the spring right. Is that completely crazy? Anything less and I don't think I'll have enough tension to keep my bust in place.
