We just had an earthquake roll through  - I've never been in one before! Cell phones aren't working by me right now, though internet is. My office is in a 100ish-year-old building, and even though it's made of stone, I'm feeling a little leary sitting here at my desk. Underneath a GIANT set of hanging shelves.

Hope everyone in the VA/East Coast areas are alright - I heard it was felt as far as NY.

I know everyone's freaking out over A: Costume College, and B: Livejournal's utter failure. I'm suffering from withdrawal because no one is posting.

HOWEVER.

I think I may have just stumbled across my personal fabric holy grail. This is the fabric that hovers in the periphery of my consciousness every time I wander into a fabric store. I'm not always specifically looking for it, but it has long been on my list of fabrics-I-dream-about-but-probably-don't-exist. Except it does. But it's $40/yard. And it's only 36 inches wide. And if I buy another yard of fabric I think my family will stage an intervention to combat my fabric buying addiction.

Moral support would be appreciated.

This summer, I've asked my students to send me postcards from their vacations. As they arrive, I've been putting the postcards on a big map so that people in the waiting room can seethe with jealousy see where their classmates are traveling.

Today I got a postcard from Istanbul, which is possibly the coolest destination I've seen so far; though  I have to say the picture of the last shuttle launch, and the medieval Spanish castle are close contenders.

I want to travel!!!

Just got out of an advanced screening - still collecting my thoughts....I think I liked it?

I'm a book purist though, so I was probably hoping for more detail and book-accuracy than a lot of people.

Yeah.

On Tuesday I went to my local thrift store - which is connected with a hospice, so the proceeds help pay for patients. And I bought $8.40 worth of merchandise. Wednesday morning, I was looking at my bank balance online, and I find an $84 charge from the hospice thrift store. Clearly there was a decimal error. I call the store. They apologize. They do the refund over the phone. How long does it take them to put the money back? It took them less than 24 hours to take the money out, why is it taking so long to show up?

On Wednesday afternoon, I ordered some sealing wax from Amazon via my work's prime account - my boss lets me use the account for the free 2-day shipping. I'm supposed to do some Hogwarts letters as prizes for my local movie theater's HP release. Today I got a package. It is a gigantic spool of beading wire that has a sticker on it labeled "sealing wax and wooden handled melting spoon." Amazon is trying to fix it, and they're giving me free 1 day shipping, but I won't get it until after this weekend, when I was planning to finish this project.

I know this is lame to whine about. I just want things to work the way they're supposed to.

I have a (very) small batch of quince jelly setting (hopefully) in the fridge. It's not fancy, and might not turn out, but it's little "let's try it and see what happens" projects like this one that get me excited about life. I love the aspect of the unknown, I love seeing how things develop, I even occasionally love the troubleshooting of an unforeseen obstacle.

If you haven't received an email from her, or been on her blog this afternoon, you may want to give it a look.

I don't mind waiting for my shoes, but it looks like it will take awhile longer.

My neighborhood's annual garage sale was this past Saturday. My mom, being a rather thrifty type, was making the after-hours rounds to see what people left out for the garbage man last night and came across an old chair.

It's a cool shape, and has nice bones, but the upholstery is in terrible condition. My mom's always wanted to reupholster a chair - she even has the fancy tools and everything, so we're going to have a go at making the chair look, well, not like new, but at least better than it currently does.

What's the worst that could happen? I'm not really into home decorating, but upholstery appeals to my secret desire to tear things apart, hit them with a hammer, and then attempt to put them back together.

Now, to start looking for fabric....

This is my new puppy!

Mosby!

I can't believe we have a puppy in the house again. He's chewing on everything, but he's sweet tempered and snuggly, and I'm glad to have a little beastie underfoot. Granted, he won't stay little - but I don't mind that either!

So so lovely - I'm so pleased with the bride's gown!!! I was surprised at how verklempt I felt over the vows; it was just so heartwarming to see how the two of them beamed at each other at the altar!

Oh, and just because...what was Princess Beatrice thinking? Lady Gaga called, she wants her lobster hat back!
